Learn Japanese from complete beginner: hiragana, katakana, kanji, vocabulary and grammar in bite-sized lessons, 24/7 AI conversation practice, and optional 1-on-1 lessons with native teachers.
How Nande works
- Build your vocabulary — Learn the words and phrases you'll actually use in conversation.
- Practice speaking — Say them out loud and get instant feedback on your Japanese.
- Use it in conversation — Put it all together in real conversations with AI.
What you can do
- Learn by real-life situations — Lessons are organized by situations like greetings, shopping and travel, with photos that make each scene easy to picture.
- The words and grammar you need to talk — Learn the everyday words and grammar that come up in real conversation, one small step at a time. Start with hiragana and build up as you go.
- Learn like you play — Match words to pictures, put sentences in order and more. Short, game-like activities keep it fun.
- Speak from day one — Say every new phrase out loud and get instant feedback. Then use it in roleplay conversations with AI, anytime and as many times as you like.
- Learn from real Japanese videos — Watch Japanese videos with subtitles you can tap. See what any word means, save the lines you like, and practice saying them yourself.
- Built to keep you going — Streaks and leagues keep you motivated. Learn comfortably from just 3 minutes a day.

FAQ
- I'm a complete beginner — is that OK?
- Yes. You can start from hiragana and katakana and progress gradually at your level.
- How far does Nande take me? Is it only for beginners?
- Nande covers JLPT N5 all the way through N1. Vocabulary, kanji and grammar all run across every level, so you can start from hiragana and keep going to advanced Japanese without switching apps.
- What can I actually practise in the app?
- Hiragana, katakana and kanji with stroke-by-stroke handwriting practice; vocabulary with example sentences and photos; grammar quizzes; culture quizzes on the things a textbook skips; and AI roleplay for speaking. It's all in one app, on one path.
- Can I practise speaking without booking a lesson?
- Yes. Roleplay puts you in real scenes — a cafe, a restaurant, a convenience store, travel — and you speak out loud with the AI. You get feedback on the spot and can redo it as many times as you like, privately, before you ever talk to a teacher.
- How does review work? Will I forget what I learn?
- Everything you study is scheduled with FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm. Vocabulary, kanji, hiragana, katakana, grammar and culture all go into the same review queue, so each item comes back right before you'd forget it.
- Can I use both the app and teacher lessons?
- Yes — self-study in the app plus 1-on-1 lessons with a teacher. Details vary by plan.
- How much time do I need per day?
- Just 3 minutes a day in spare moments is fine. A little every day builds real skill.
- Does it work on phone and computer?
- Yes — available as an iOS and Android app, and in your web browser.
- Can I cancel anytime?
- Yes, you can cancel anytime.
